Orientation Week is your introduction to life at Western Law. Be prepared to meet many of your classmates, attend your first lectures in law school, and have a great time! The Orientation Committee is pleased to organize a week of opportunities to make friends and get settled into Western Law. We’ve worked hard all summer to make O-Week fun for all first-year students, and we strongly encourage you to attend every event. You only get one O-Week and you don’t want to miss it! The Justices of the Party (“JPs” if you will) are 2L volunteers who are here to help you transition into Law School. Whether it’s organizing get-togethers before O-Week events, providing you with summaries and advice on professors, or being that shoulder to cry on, they are here to support you all year long!

8:30 AM: INDUCTION CEREMONY
Your first day of law school is an early one! Please arrive at 8:30 AM for registration. Registration will take place in Chambers on the ground floor of the law building, after which you will go to a classroom assigned to your Small Group.
During this time with your Small Group, the Student Legal Society (SLS) will be circulating to collect the $200 SLS Fee and assign lockers. You will have the opportunity to meet the other members of your Small Group as well as your JPs. Don’t be afraid to chat – your classmates will be a major part of your life for the next three years! There will be a grab and go continental breakfast consisting of coffee, tea, and muffins on your way to the Induction Ceremony
11:00AM: INDUCTION CEREMONY
At 10:30 AM, you will be escorted by your JPs to North Campus Building, which is a 15-minute walk from the Law School, for Western Law’s Induction Ceremony! You have already received a formal invitation to this event from Dean Erika Chamberlain. This is an important part of Orientation designed to formally welcome you to Western Law and to the legal profession. Business attire is required, which typically means suits. However, it’s perfectly appropriate to wear pants/skirt with a collared shirt and tie or a nice blouse.
The Western Law community looks forward to sharing this important milestone with you!
After the Induction Ceremony and lunch, you may have some time to change out of your suits (if you wish) for your first academic session at 2:15 pm, also at the North Campus Building.
4:00–6:00 PM: FREE TIME
This is your chance to head home and rest up before a night of fun with your small group! You may also choose to purchase your textbooks during this time.
6:00 PM: SMALL GROUP PICNICS
Enjoy dinner with your small group in either Springbank or Gibbons Park! Check with your JP to see what location your small group will be meeting at. Feel free to bring a lawn chair, blanket, frisbee, spikeball, or any other outdoor game.
REMINDERS FOR THE FIRST DAY:
- Arrive on time! (If you run into any issues that will delay your attendance, please call the Admissions Office at 519-661-3347.)
- Leave your laptop at home.
- Bring your credit or debit card for textbooks, and bring cash or a cheque for your SLS Fees ($200).
- Wear professional business attire and bring a change of clothes if you wish. If you are unsure about what to wear, please feel free to reach out to the Orientation Week Co-Chairs!
DAY TWO: Wednesday September 8, 2021
6:00–10:00 PM: KICKBALL TOURNAMENT
This kickball tournament is an opportunity to get active with some friendly competition. Your small group will be competing against the rest to see who has the best kickball players at Western Law. The event is sponsored by Lexis Nexis, and the winning team will receive a special prize from our sponsor.
7:00 PM: ONLINE TRIVIA NIGHT
Online trivia night will be a low key way to connect with your classmates. If kickball is not the activity for you, we recommend logging on to compete on behalf of your small group in some trivia fun.
7:00 PM: LGBTQ+ BOWLING SOCIAL at PALASAD SOCIAL BOWL
Students who identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community are invited to join OUTLaws at Palasad Social Bowl (Adelaide and Oxford) on Wednesday September 8th for dinner and bowling! This event, generously sponsored by Blakes, is a great opportunity to meet more of your classmates and many of the upper year students here at Western Law.
DAY THREE: Thursday September 9, 2021
6:00 PM: FIRST YEAR GALA
After another full day at the law school, we add a touch of class to O-Week with our First-Year Gala! Join your classmates, professors, and the Faculty of Law’s Deans for dinner at RBC place. Alcohol will not be included, but will be available at an additional cost. This event is a highlight for O-Week. Semi-formal attire is recommended.
DAY FOUR: Friday September 10, 2021
10:00 PM: GRAFFITI NIGHT AT THE WAVE
To complete your journey through your first week at Western Law, we have the famous Graffiti Party, which will be held at The Wave. This event is generously sponsored by Cassels, Fasken and Lenczner Slaght. Throughout the evening, you are encouraged to leave your mark on your classmates’ shirts – sign your name, write a note, draw a picture – creativity is encouraged! The result is a great night, new friendships and an O-Week keepsake that will make you smile for years to come. Make sure to bring a white T-shirt that your classmates can write on, preferably your O-Week shirt!
